dear Sharas,
Thx for the reply.
I have a different opinion on this matter. I believe, ideally speaking, religion is a personal matter, not to be decided by either the family or state.
However this ideal is not practicable in Malysia, simply because a Muslim and a non-Muslim cannot marry without converting. That is, the non-Muslim is expected to convert becoming Muslim. The other way round is not allowed by law.
In case of a married non-Muslim man/woman decide to convert, the marriage becomes null and void. Any further relationship between them is considered an illicit affair, and any child conceived after that is considered illegal. Family breaks apart. The guys dies, and property gets into hands of the religious dept, leaving the wife and kids in cold. Hell breaks out at funerals. Civil court abdicates responsibility, and the syariah court makes decision based on supremacy of Islam, rather than justice and humanity.
Add to that, becoming a Muslim is a one way decision: you can personally decide to be one, but cannot decide to revert, that is up to the state.
In this context, religion is not, AN CANNOT BE, A PERSONAL MATTER, since it tears apart the family.
Unless an until the field is levelled, I have to accept the fact that religion is NOT A PERSONAL MATTER in Malaysia.
I hope somebody explains this to the good Tok Guru. Thank you.
